Baseball Buddha - What's in a Name
"Baseball is Happiness" - Baseball Buddha
Baseball Buddha is my way of blending my love for the game with a deeper, reflective journey. It's more than just a moniker—it's a philosophy, a pursuit of enlightenment through baseball. The name represents my quest to explore the essence of baseball beyond stats and players, understanding the values it embodies, the connection it creates with fans, and how it reflects my journey to find deeper meaning. Baseball isn’t just about the MLB; it’s about all levels, from Little League to college ball, where those timeless values are cultivated. The MLB is aspirational, but the real heart of baseball lies in every level that makes up the sport.
For me, it’s not about the players or the stats—it's about the fan experience, the nostalgia, and the story behind the game. I love the comfort that baseball provides, whether it's the long season unfolding day by day, the familiar voices on the radio, the sights and sounds at the ballpark, or the games on TV. It gives me peace and helps me escape the stresses of daily life. Life can get complicated, and finding a passion that you enjoy, one that reinforces positivity and joy, makes it even better. Taking Baseball Buddha to the next level means creating writing that goes beyond sharing stories and facts; it must show why baseball is a reflection of my beliefs.
I focus a lot on Pete Rose in my River Rat series. He is an enigma to me—a complex character who serves as a study of the contradictions that make baseball, and life, so fascinating. His story challenges my perspective on integrity and resilience.
I also challenge myself with photography, learning how to use a camera and shape and create pictures for the pure joy of it. This creative pursuit parallels my exploration of baseball, capturing moments that go beyond the field, evoking emotion and connection.
Baseball is about integrity, resilience, and the spirit of playing hard—doing the right thing even when no one is watching. When I look back, the memories that truly matter aren’t about stats or glory; they're about those moments that demanded more of me, when I had to rise to the occasion, just as in life where challenges test our character.
I want my writing to reflect the lessons I’ve learned from baseball—lessons about character, accountability, and questioning the narratives we’re fed. Baseball taught me that success is not just about winning but about giving your all, being fair, and standing by your principles. Nostalgia plays a key role here, taking me back to my youth when baseball was pure, before commercial interests clouded what really mattered. Those memories help me reconnect with the values that shaped me, and I believe others can find meaning in them too. My goal in sharing these stories isn’t just to remember the past—it’s to highlight why these values are still crucial today in a world that often overlooks them.
I want readers to feel what I feel: the beauty of a game played with heart, the value of honesty, and how those early moments on the field transcend mere history. They remind us of what’s important: true effort, authenticity, and integrity. Baseball is about more than just skill; it's about the way you carry yourself, how you treat your teammates, and how you face adversity. My hope is that through my writing, people will see baseball not just as a sport but as a way of life—a call to live with purpose, challenge popular narratives, and approach every challenge with integrity. I want my words to inspire others to reflect on their own experiences, to find the moments that made them who they are, and to carry those lessons forward, both on and off the field.

Well put, Buddha.
