Gavvy Cravath is one of the guys from the picture on my wall, and he just didn’t fit the mold of the Dead Ball Era. While everyone else was busy bunting, slapping singles, and playing small ball, here comes Cravath swinging for the fences like he was living in the future. He was a home run king during a time when baseballs barely made it out of the infield, let alone over the fences. He led the National League in home runs six times between 1913 and 1919, which is wild considering the ball back then was basically a soggy mess.
