I picked up this vinyl called Hank Aaron, The Life of a Legend at a vintage shop. It was released by Fleetwood Records in 1974, the same year Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record. It’s narrated by Curt Gowdy and runs like a radio documentary, covering Aaron’s life and career up through that historic moment when he hit home run number 715.
Fleetwood put out a lot of sports-related records in the ’60s and ’70s—stuff like team recaps, interviews, and tribute albums. This one focuses on Aaron’s early years, his time in Milwaukee and Atlanta, and includes broadcast highlights along the way. Gowdy’s narration gives it that classic feel. It’s not flashy, but it’s respectful and solid.
I’ll be playing the full record on Baseball Buddha Radio Network. It’s a nice listen and a good way to remember what Aaron accomplished—and what he went through to get there.
