I’ve got this framed picture hanging in my office titled TEN STAR OUTFIELDERS OF THE NATIONAL BASEBALL LEAGUE, which came from The National Police Gazette. I found it in an antique store a few years ago, thought it was cool, and decided to have it professionally framed. It seemed like a good idea at the time, one of those things I just do. Now it’s up on my wall, and I keep looking at it, realizing I don’t actually know much about the players or even that era of baseball. Honestly, I’m not sure how interested I am, other than the fact that it’s part of baseball history. But since it’s there, I’ve decided to spend the next ten weeks looking into each of these guys and figuring out when this thing was published. It feels like a good way to connect with a part of baseball that feels distant, almost unreal, but still important.
